Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, and Marriage Licenses are kept on file in the town where the event took place. Birth Certificates are kept on file in the town where the birth took place. If a person was born in Wantage, then the certificate should be on file in the Office of the Wantage Registrar. If the birth took place in another town, you should contact that town to obtain a copy of the certificate. Marriage Licenses are kept on file in the town where the wedding took place. If a wedding ceremony took place in Wantage, then the certificate should be on file in the Office of the Wantage Registrar. If the wedding ceremony took place in another town, you should contact that town to obtain a copy of the certificate. Even if you made your application for a marriage license in Wantage, if the wedding ceremony did not take place in Wantage Township, the Wantage Registrar will not have the certificate on file. THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR OBTAINING A COPY OF AN EXISTING MARRIAGE LICENSE. If a person died in Wantage, then the certificate should be on file in the Office of the Wantage Registrar. If the death took place in another town, you should contact that town to obtain a copy of the certificate. Governor James McGreevey has signed Executive Order #18, to combat Identification Fraud. This executive order is designed to reduce instances of forgery and fraud in the issuance of all vital statistic records, including birth, death and marriage certificates. The Executive Order requires that the Wantage Registrar of Vital Statistics only issue a certified copy of a vital record to persons who are the subject of the vital record, or are the subject's parent, legal guardian, spouse, child, grandchild or sibling, if of legal age. Certified copies can also be obtained in certain other limited circumstances such as upon court order. All of the information requested on the form must be provided, as well as the required proof of identify, and the appropriate fee, before a certificate will be issued.
