Evacuation in Wantage Township
There are two types of Evacuation possible: Mass Relocation and Localized Relocation.

Mass Relocation means the evacuation of most of the Township or the entire Township

If the entire town needs to evacuate, take one car per household.

Whenever possible, follow recommended evacuation routes. Do not take shortcuts. They may be blocked. Be alert for washed-out roads and bridges. Do not drive into flooded areas. Stay away from downed power lines.

The main routes for conducting a Mass evacuation in Wantage are:
State Highway Route 23: traveling north will bring you out of Wantage into Montague Township; traveling south will bring you out of Wantage into Hardyston Township
State Highway Route 284: traveling in a northeasterly direction will bring you out of Wantage into New York State very close to the Vernon Township boundary line.
County Route 519: traveling northeasterly will bring you out of Wantage into New York State very close to the Montague Township boundary line. Traveling northwesterly will bring you out of Wantage into Frankford Township.
County Route 565: traveling in a westerly direction will bring you out of Wantage through Frankford Township; traveling in an easterly direction will bring you to Route 23, which you can continue to take in a southerly direction out of Wantage.

If you do not own a car:
make transportation arrangements with friends, family, or with Wantage Town Hall.

If you cannot evacuate on your own:
the main staging areas for assisting people are:

The Colesville Firehouse on Route 23
The Beemerville Firehouse on Route 519
The Wantage Township Municipal Building on Route 23

Additional Staging areas to assist with evacuation may include:

The Wantage School on Route 23
The Church of the Good Shepherd on Route 23
High Point Regional High School on Pigeon Hill Road

Localized Relocation means the temporary evacuation of a section of Wantage Township.
Temporary shelters will be set up to accommodate the relocation of various sectors of the Township in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

For a temporary, localized evacuation, shelters will include:

High Point Regional High School
The Wantage School
The Sussex Fire House

Notification of Evacuation will be given to the affected population through local radio stations (WSUS-FM, WNNJ-FM), and on Service Electric Cable TV. Efforts will also be made through public address systems on public safety vehicles, and door-to-door canvassing. When advance notice can be given, local newspapers will also be utilized (New Jersey Herald).
