When Visiting Wantage Township’s Parks, Remember:
Carry In ... Carry Out

Woodbourne Park and the Recreation Fields at Lott Road are “carry in, carry out” facilities with respect to food, food containers, and garbage.

The Wantage Board of Recreation Commissioners invites the general public to come out and visit the beautiful public parks in Wantage, but also to remember: Please remove all trash! Garbage cans are not provided in the public parks of Wantage Township. The person responsible for the garbage must carry their waste away from the park. No one may dump or leave behind any bottles, broken glass, ashes, paper, cans, or other trash on the park grounds.

“Leaving garbage behind in the parks is not allowed for very good reasons”, explains Township Of Wantage Administrator Jim Doherty. “Keeping garbage out of the parks keeps away unwelcome visitors, such as bears, rodents, and insects”.

Doherty explains that there is also a cost to the taxpayers involved when people do not take responsibility for their own garbage. “Wantage does not have a municipal solid waste collection program”, says Doherty. “When garbage is left behind, some one has to pay for its removal. Both the Recreation Commission and the Governing Body have agreed that the people who generate the garbage are the ones who should be responsible for its removal, rather than the taxpayers”.

The Township Of Wantage will be placing signs at strategic locations within the parks as reminders to the general public, regarding this matter. Doherty thanks all members of the public for their cooperation.

“This comes down to common sense and common courtesy” says Doherty. “The Mayor, Members of the Committee, and Recreation Board members all appreciate the on-going cooperation of our youth sports programs and members of the general public in helping us to keep Wantage’s public parks a fun and safe place to visit”.
