The title for this year’s essay was “Jamestown Colony is Settled”. The students had to take on the persona of one of the early settlers and write a letter to a family member who remained in England telling them about the activities and hardships involved with helping to establish the settlement. This topic coincided with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.
The winning essays were selected from 196 entries submitted from five Sussex County schools. The winners received a DAR winner’s certificate as well as a bronze medal and a United States Savings Bond. Each participant received a “Certificate of Participation”.
On April 13th Brody Adamsky and James Bentson will be honored at the state awards ceremony and luncheon at the Sheraton Edison Hotel Raritan Center. Brody’s essay was selected as the first place fifth grade essay in the state. James’s essay was ranked first in the seventh grade category.
On Saturday, April 28th a luncheon will be held in their honor at the Van Bunschooten Museum in Wantage Township. Also honored will be the Good Citizen recipients from Sussex County High Schools and the DAR American History Teacher of the Year, Christine Henry from High Point Regional High School.
