Taxpayers Be Aware

It has come to the attention of the Sussex County Board of Taxation that there is false solicitation being distributed throughout Sussex County in the form of a pink postcard.  This pink postcard resembles the mandatory assessment notice sent to all taxpayers as required by law. The information on this pink postcard may not necessarily reflect the correct assessed value or other information concerning your property. This pink postcard is NOT APPROVED by the State of New Jersey or the Sussex County Board of Taxation.

Various companies solicit their services promising a property tax reduction this time of year.  Here are a few things to be aware of:

  1. Assessment Notice:   NJSA 54:-38.1 (also known as Chapter 75) requires: The municipal assessor to annually send a notice of assessment stating the current year assessed value.  This notice typically comes in the form of a post card. It will have your municipality listed as the return address also printed on the back it will say APPEAL INSTRUCTIONS, along with the State of NJ website and Sussex County Tax Board information.
  2. Check your assessed value:  The Certified assessed value will appear on your assessment notice, and can also be verified through your assessor’s office or the County Board of Taxation.
  3. Make yourself aware of proper tax appeal filing procedures which can be obtained from the Sussex County Board of Taxation
